Our approach is two-pronged. One is pure philanthropy. We supply schools with libraries, library books, educational materials, textbooks and school gardens. Something as simple as outdoor toilets improves school retention rates, especially for young girls.
Our second approach is self-sustaining philanthropy, a powerful way for people to help themselves. With our Kenyan partner Help Self Help Centre [visit HSHC], students learn a vocational skill in a six-month classroom course or in the field.
A teen from the heart of Nairobi, a single mother at the base of Mt. Kenya, a dirt-poor farmer from Naro Moru can choose from tying fish flies to keeping honey bees and silk worms, raising mushrooms, sewing and tailoring, welding, aquaculture, maintaining a seed bank, natural resource management, agribusiness and biodiesel production.
Students learn, produce and market. Parents support their families.
