Kenya in Crisis

The Problem

The post-election violence has severely disrupted Kenyan society and the economy. It is estimated over 800 people have been killed, many more injured and perhaps as many as 500,000 displaced. As people have lost their homes and livelihoods, and fear for their lives, they seek refuge in safe havens such as police stations, church compounds and tent cities. Food is scarce in the camps, and the Kenyan Red Cross estimates that displaced people will be completely dependent on relief-aid until at least the August harvest.

Truckers are not hauling for fear of looting. Goods are not delivered including fuel and food. Only 20% of farm produce makes it to market. Rats and other rodents, attracted by the rotting food, pose an increased risk of disease. While food rots in the fields, people starve in camps.

The Solution

The Kenya School Project and its partner Help Self Help Centre, a registered Kenyan nonprofit, are active in the Central Province, a farming region. We hope to buy 3,000 tons of food over the next seven months from 5,000 small farmers who live around our vocational training center. This solution will provide food for 15,000 displaced people until the August harvest and income for 5,000 destitute farmers. It will prevent waste and disease. Eventually we plan to build a cooling facility and to train a thousand farmers to build traditional storage units.

Self-sustaining work can survive, even thrive, in a crisis.

The Cost

  • Purchase Cost of Farmers' Produce: $102,000.00
  • Transportation from Farms to Camps: $58,000.00
  • Government Security for Regular Transport: $7,500.00
